Over the last 28 years Huawei have developed a portfolio of end to end solutions in telecoms, enterprise networking, devices and cloud computing. The company provides products and services to one third of the world’s population and to date it has helped more than one third of the world connect to the internet, with telecoms carriers the company has built more than 1,500 networks Worldwide.

Last year Huawei saw a year on year revenue increase of 37% and they have allocated a large portion of this extra revenue to research and development. 45% of the company’s employees work in R&D, Huawei say they are taking a longer term view of technology. The company are trying to solve large and fundamental questions; Huawei say they are thinking about how technology ought to develop to better serve human society.

Top Three Device Manufacturers

Huawei’s consumer business grew by over 70% last year, the company experienced amazing growth particularly in China and they are now one of the World’s top three mobile device manufacturers in terms of market share.

Carrier Business

Huawei’s 4G equipment has been widely deployed around the world and it is now being used in the capital cities of over 140 countries. Huawei recently launched their 4.5G solution to meet consumer demand for a better experience while protecting their carrier investment in 4G. Huawei have built over 280 commercial networks with their 400G core routers and they are extremely excited about the possibilities 5G can offer, the company invests heavily into the research and development of new products and technology.

Physical and Digital Worlds

Huawei believe that future technological advancements will bring the physical and digital worlds closer together. The company plan to focus their R&D on four key areas. The four areas that Huawei has identified for further research and development are: smart devices, connectivity (such as 5G), artificial intelligence and security. Huawei are particularly excited about mobile devices and connectivity.

Huawei Say 5G Will Become the Backbone of Society

One technology that Huawei are currently researching heavily is 5G, the company say that they see this technology becoming the backbone of society within the next 5 years.

5G & Frequency Spectrum Research

5G is set to become the next generation of mobile communications technology. The technology will become standard in 2020 and offer massive speed improvements over the current 4G standard. 5G will be 100 times faster and it will offer 1000 times greater data transfer capacity, the technology will connect 100 billion devices by 2025. The technology will not just connect smart phones, it will be able to connect everything including cars, homes and many business applications.

In a recent blog post Huawei said they are, “leading research efforts to use the millimetre wave spectrum”. Huawei say, “The millimetre wave part of the frequency spectrum, 30 GHz to 300 GHz, has the potential to solve the capacity issue regarding the massive increase in data that is generated by 4G, and in the future by 5G, both for the backhaul and for access.”

Millimetre Wave

Millimetre wave will provide high capacity for multiple users in cities and towns, millimetre wave will offload data congestion and facilitate services that require wide band. Millimetre wave will be able to facilitate services such as ultra-high definition video streaming, augmented reality and downloads of large amounts of data.

Huawei say that there is still a lot of uncertainty over the actual frequency bands that will be allocated by WRC in 2019 so their research is still at an early stage of development. The company’s research has been divided into four groups of frequency bands (namely Groups 30, 40, 50 and 80 GHz).

R&D is something that Huawei take very seriously, 45% of the company’s 170, 000 employees work in R&D, Huawei has 16 R&D centres globally and 28 joint innovation centres. Last year, Huawei invested nearly 15%, $7 billion of revenue into the research of new products and technologies.

The EU & China

The European Union & China have made a landmark agreement to collaborate and co-fund research and innovation, the agreement will see 640 million euros invested into 5G research between now and 2020.

Smart Cities

Huawei have entered into agreements with a number of governments and cities, most recently the company have signed agreements with Sardinia, Malta, Hannover and Gelsenkirchen in Germany. Huawei have provided Smart City solutions to more than 100 cities in over 40 countries around the world, Huawei currently supplies Safe City solutions to more than 400 million people worldwide.
